How often have I heard a man say that leaving a little to the imagination is far sexier than showing it all? Much to my amazement I have also heard many a man say that a one- piece swimsuit is far more sexier than a bikini, based on my opening statement. This gave me the idea to write this hub, to present both pieces of swim-wear in its finest form, concluding with a poll to determine which piece is in fact the winning choice. I have written this article not only for men, but for women as well, to hear from both sexes on their views on this controversial topic. When casting your vote ladies, please keep in mind that you are voting not on what you yourself feel more comfortable wearing, but what you feel is the sexier piece also. Enough said, let us now celebrate the bikini and the one-piece swim-suit, two of the most sexiest items a woman has in her little side drawers.

THE BIKINI
The bikini since making its debut on French beaches, back in 1947, has been donned by many a female bather, in all shapes and sizes and admired and lusted by many a man on this great planet. Over the years the bikini has gradually changed in shape from a more 'conservative costume' all the way to the skimpier and 'barely there' styles available on the market today.
TOPS:
Tops are available with shoe-string straps, halter necks, regular looking bra-straps, strapless styles and crop top designs. The actual piece of fabric that covers the breast can range from scanty triangular pieces of fabric, to more bra-shape designs, that now are available with medium to high padding, and even push-up bra support. The push-ups are great for women who are small breasted to create the illusion of a large more voluptuous cleavage, or an added bonus for the 'average' to 'larger size' breasted woman who simply wants to emphasise her most notable assets.
BOTTOMS:
Bottoms are sold in full briefs, boy leg, triangular cuts of fabric, with or without ties at the sides, high-cut or low-cut legs all the way to the completely daring G-string designs. Now-days there are styles to suit all woman's body shapes, as bikinis are now designed to correct larger thighs or shorter legs, to slim down the abdomen, to camouflage a large bottom or to create that high waisted look that gives the woman without a definite waist-line the illusion of a more defined waist.
WHO ARE WEARING BIKINIS
Olympic Games
In 2004, we see that many athletes are beginning to wear an adaption of a bikini in a more sports-style design. At the 2006 Asian Games at Doha, Qatar, Iraqis protested against them. In another instance at the 2007 South Pacific Games, athletes were asked to don a more 'consersative' crop top in replacement of the bikini top. There was also much talk at the West Asian Games 2006, where women athletes were asked by officials to replace their 'bikini style' pants with long shorts. I can imagine the great freedom to be able to wear a sports-style Lycra bikini, if I were indeed an athlete.
Beach Volleyball
In 1994 the world saw the official uniform change for beach volleyball into the sports bikini, much to the delight of many male viewers around the world. It
certainly has introduced a new sex appeal into the game as they report Beach Volleyball is in the top five most viewed sports in the entire
Olympic Games.
Gold Coast Meter Maids
In good 'ole Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia, since 1965, lovely long- legged meter maids have been employed to diffuse the long strip of parking meters that were erected there. Walking through Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise is a real treat for hot blooded men, as the gold bikini -clad maids stroll leisurely through the streets.
The Gold Coast, Australia's Indy Girls
Since 1991, the Gold Coast Indy 300, is an annual event, that spans over a four day period, that attracts millions of tourists to Surfers Paradise, partly for the awesome racing event, partly for the continual partying and the Gold Coast Indy babes who compete against each other each year for the 'Miss Indy' crown.
THE ONE-PIECE SWIMSUIT
The one piece swimsuit originated way before the introduction of the bikini, and once upon a time in days gone past, men too wore a similar costume to that of the woman. Where once the one piece was way more conservative than the bikini, these days it can be just as raunchy in its glorious design, or little of it. A one piece is considered far more flattering to a larger figure but as you will see it looks fabulous on all shapes and sizes.
DESIGNS:
There are numerous adaptions of the one piece available on the market today. The one-piece is far more adept at camouflaging womens problem areas, due to the extra fabric employed in these designs. The fabrics that one-piece swim-wear are now available in, is now at a fashionable high with metallic, hot prints, satin-look and high gloss colours readily available in shops everywhere.In some instances you can see that the one piece has indeed shrunk in certain styles, almost showing the same amount of flesh as a bikini. In today's world as you know anything goes.
I myself wear both for different occasions as I adore both the one-piece and bikini.
WHO ARE WEARING ONE-PIECE SWIMSUITS?
Ex- Baywatch Beauties
Who can forget the ultra sexy but not so interesting American series about a group of hot Los Angeles life-guards, that aired on our screens from 1989 - 1999, Baywatch. However we desire to knock the show it actually is featured in the Guinness Book Of Records, as the most watched television show ever, with over a billion viewers. Now that is saying something! Pamela Anderson and many of the other beautiful actresses on the show brought a new popularity on the one-piece swimsuit, as a keen new interest was re-invented. Those hot red swimsuits never looked so hot, as when those long legged, huge busted women stepped into them. Something to do with the popularity of the show I dare-say.
Miss World Pageants
The Miss World Pageant has been aired since 1959, where bikinis were replaced with one piece swimsuits back in those days, due to the public out-cry. It certainly did not tone down the sizzle that this contest has had upon the general public as beauties from all over the world dazzle us with their charisma from all across the planet. There is certainly a great sex- appeal in those high-cut, one piece, body hugging designs that cannot be denied.
Olympic Games Sporting Events
The number one bearers of the one-piece swimsuits at the Olympic Games are undoubtedly the members of the swimming team, who have promoted Speedo swim-wear enormously over the years, while utilising them for their performance. Speedo has to be on the top end scale of the most successful swimwear ever.Speedo publicly boasts that up to 70% of medalists are wearers of their top award swim-wear.

I would have to say that the "sex appeal" of a swimsuit is mainly about how it looks on a woman. My eyes are generally more apt to look at the bikini. However, if it doesn't look right then a woman in a one piece can be just as sexy. I agree with isis, the one piece does add more to wonder about while the bikini is like "bam" this is what I got.

No, thank you. Bringing visibility to this particular issue is very important. I can't count the number of times I've heard a woman say, "If I can lose ten pounds I can wear a bikini." Its a shame that so much pressure to look or be "hot" is put on women. Great hub, keep it up.

Great hub, BP! With the pic's you have placed, there does not seem to be much difference between some one-piece and bikini's. I feel the best what makes the woman feel sexy and confident! Also, what suits her body type! If a woman feels confident than she will likely attract the like. Personally, I prefer bikini's with my body-type, though I keep a one-piece around should an occasion or sport call for it. In the fashion world, I feel there are many sexy one-piece suits that portray glamour and mystery on a more sophisticated level than a bikini! :)

Very very true Jodie, it is very hard to find one piece swim-suits these days that don't show the abs or a fair bit of flesh, yes making them very similar to bikinis.But yes there are some smashing ones around.Definitely a one piece is better when a big wave crashes on you and dumps you to sure, at least you know you are going to have something left on haha. Been there done that 100 times. xo
Lol Brenda I agree with everything you said 100%. You know the way the head sort of twists in a split second and it sort of gets a cramp and stays there, as the weight of the head causes the jaw to drop and the tongue to protrude lifelessly out the lips. xo

I think the bikini is sexier but the one piece can be sexy too, depending on the color and the cut. What makes the bikini sexy is the fact that women can show off their belly button, which is always a HOT feature.

Blonde I think it depends on the body in it. If you still have a nice tummy do the bikini, if your breasts are your best asset then a one piece will steer the eye up.

Well.. it totally depends on the style. Some one pieces are far sexier than any bikini and can be the other way round too. I would look for style in my swim suit - it doesn't matter if it's 1 / 2 piece :)

most of those swimsuits were redonculous, a swimsuit was made to swim in (duh) so me and my boyfriend are 100% bikini, but sensible bikini of the string variety because i know from experiance that they fit a large variety of "shapes" and are easy to navigate through water in because you don't have to worry about your melons popn out the top because they are individually packaged
ROFL HB you have me googling redonculous now. Yes they were originally just made to swim in but many buy them just to get the "look". I like to know when I am wearing them my melons wont pop out too, definitely. :)

I think it all depends on the chest size. If a girl is flat chested, there is no need for a bikini. But if you got the chest for it and the body, go for the bikini. That is the truth of what I am going with.

I found the polls interesting. Maybe a woman (which I am) isn't the best judge, but I think bikinis are sexier. I think one-pieces (especially the one in the photo below) are often prettier or more elegant. I think it's pretty hard to deny the sexiness of those bikinis, though. :)

Swimsuit coverage is a math thing, ya know. Coverage is directly proportional to age. The older the woman, the more coverage we prefer, the younger the girl, the less coverage we prefer.
Anyways, I voted for the bikini. A woman's belly button is fascinating, can't hide that if you don't have to. Is there a hub about belly buttons?

What a fantastic hub. You have done some great research. I think all look great except some of the one pieces that try to hard to be cutting edge. I am more of a classic girl I guess. The bottom line is that if you can wear it well, it's going to look good.

I really don't watch sports but beach volley ball will stop my remote control dead in it's tracks. I was swayed to bikini from these televised events because they allow the rear end to jiggle with the wiggle. The players while physically fit are not rock hard like a weight trainer so some have a slight bit of bulging around the edges that jiggles as they play. I know that probably makes me a "dirty old man", maybe rightfully so, but would the sport be so popular with out the bikini? I think probably not.
I enjoyed the pictures but they really don't represent the average woman. So for you Gal's with the big butt's, just know you have one fan and keep wearing those bikini's LOL I be looking for you.

Howdy Blondepoet.I was was interested in more of your humor but was distracted and curious. I actually breezed through the pics. I voted for the one piece but I don't know if I have a preference. I think I'm a couple hundred years old and although I do love the female body, I know that "pretty is as pretty does". I am a cyclist and I've put political and cycling info on facebook, as well as other serious stuff- I put a farce of a picture of cycling ladies over bikes, scantily clad- that really got the "hits". Hi BP, well from the 1st of March I am going to the Red Sea (Egypt) for 17 days and staying in the Hilton Taba. Can't wait, as although it won't be scorching hot, it will be a whole lot hotter than here right now, and in the day the lowest the temp should go is 15 degrees.

You forgot to mention the ultimate one piece BP. A nice waist length T-shirt with nothing else beneath, it can hide all the necessary body language from general view...but can flip for fun between those more intimately acquainted. And it works for men or women if in a pool private like. Wink wink =)

I took a lot of time to read over your article and thought on it for a while. This is my conclusion. If you are comfortable with your body it doesn't matter if you wear a one or two piece. Your inner confidence will show through to the outside if you wear a potato sack. lol... But, a lot of the two pieces are sexually provocative (as I am sure men will agree) and you should be careful what message you are trying to send out. If you want to be respected and viewed as lady-like (persay) then think a swimsuit through carefully. Two piece doesn't necessarily scream (sex me up) and a one piece doesn't scream ( I'm classy) it is all in presentation and how you carry yourself.
