The Funniest People Who Have Walked This Planet
73Who are some of the funniest actors of all time?
Today I most humbly present my own collection of some of the most funniest people who have graced this planet. Please remember this is my own personal choice, what may be my cup of tea, may not be yours. Some of them are still kicking strong, while sadly others have passed away.
They are the legends, the funny male actors that have the ability to make me laugh the hardest, they are indeed my favourites. So without much further ado let us honour each one, each funny comedian for the many smiles they have imparted on faces worldwide.
Benny Hill (21 January 1924 – 19 April 1992)
'The Benny Hill Show' is probably the most hilarious comedy show I think I have ever seen. It is currently running in Australia at the moment, and has been, for as long as I can remember. The 'Benny Hill Show' first ran in 1969 til its cancellation in 1989, across televisions all around the world. Benny Hill is a natural, you can cry your eyes out, simply from just looking at him.
This legend worked the camera to his advantage, he was almost spell-bounding with his half cheek look he wore and flaunted for the bright lenses.
Some folk considered him to be a bit of a "dirty ole man", as he was well renown for ripping the clothes of sexily attired women in his shows. I just adore Benny Hill, his humour is right down my alley.
Michael Crawford(born 19 January 1942)
One of my favourite shows has always been Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em (1973–1978) starring this incredible actor. His brilliant portrayal of Frank Spencer, a bumbling accident-prone disaster on two legs has given me many a laugh. He is known to do a lot of his own stunts on the show, stemming from his circus background as an acrobat.
"Oh the cat did a whoopsie in me beret", is a classic line from this hilarious show
If you ever happen to talk to me on Skype or some other Internet chat site, remind me to do my Frank impersonation for you. Oh you will love it or hate it, one of the two, I believe I do it well.
JOHN CLEESE
John Cleese (born 27 October 1939)
Fawlty Towers (first aired in 1975) still runs here in Australia nightly. Indeed it was Basil, played so cleverly portrayed by Cleese that has given me more laughs at nighttime than I can possibly count. Did you know that Fawlty Towers came first on a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes compiled by the British Film Institute, in the year 2000. Cleese has a uncanny way of falling over his own legs, belting his waiter Manuel in the back of the head and cursing at little old ladies that frequent his Hotel. He is simply hilarious, I can't help but laugh at nearly everything he does.
Robin Williams (born July 21, 1951
Robin Williams is an incredibly funny actor, as well as a very serious one when needed. His films I have most enjoyed include 'Mrs. Doubtfire', 'The Fisher King' and 'Nine Months' . In 'Nine Months' his role was hysterical. He plays the role of an eccentric Russian doctor who has progressed from an animal to a human doctor, with little experience in his new field. Now he is handling human births much to the horror of his horrified patient, played by Julianne Moore.
The highlight of this movie is when he was trying to persuade the hesitant Julieanne to hop up on his examining table.
"Excuse me would you hop up please I would like to take a look at your Volvo"
He meant vulva of course. Another word he bungled, was the word epidural with enema in the heat of the delivery room scene. This movie gave me many belly laughs indeed.
Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977)
Sadly this talented and highly successful actor died some time time ago, but the magic of his movies will always charm us. It was his thick black eyebrows, with an over sized black moustache, glasses, cigar,on top of his hilarious antics that set him out from many that have followed after him. In total he made around 13 feature films with his siblings, The Marx Brothers. He was a very funny man, make a note to watch some of his old films, if you ever get the chance.
Whoopi Goldberg (born November 13, 1955)
Millions of fans from all around the world can't all be wrong with the love they have for this actress. This woman is extremely funny, without any doubt. The dreadlocks, the little rabbit teeth, the husky voice, it all combines to add to the magic this woman has. Some of her great films she has starred in include The Color Purple (1985), Sister Act (1992), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998) and Ghost (1990). Whoopi is at the top of my list for the most funny women, no questions asked.
Eddie Murphy (Born April 3,1961)
How can this man not be considered funny with that husky, infectious laugh of his for starters. His role of Donkey in Shrek, always brings a pile of laughs for me guaranteed. Not only is he a comedian but an actor, film director, producer, and singer. Did you know that he is the highest grossing actor in motion picture history. Some of his memorable films include 'The Nutty Proffessor', 'The Money Train', 'Beverly Hills Cop' and 'Shrek'. How can an actor who played three quarters of his family in 'The Nutty Proffessor', not be one of the greatest.
Gene Wilder (born Jerome Silberman, June 11, 1933)
I loved Gene Wilder in the film 'Stir Crazy', he was absolutely hilarious. If you have not seen the film watch the trailer for the movie that I have included in this Hub, it's insane. With his frizzy hair and his bulging eyes, you will be sure to laugh at this movie masterpiece. I admire the people who make it in Hollywood, without the beautiful looks to get them in. When you make it with talent alone, then that is a success story.
Jim Carrey (Born James Eugene Carrey January 17, 1962)
What impresses me about this man is the amount of facial distortions he is capable of, much more than I could ever hope to perform in a lifetime. You have to give him credit for that alone. He has been listed in 'The Observer' as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy, of all time, and hey we are talking British here. Some of the movies he has made that have made me laugh are 'Dumb and Dumber', 'The Mask', 'Liar Liar', 'Bruce Almighty', and 'Yes Man'.
Rowan Atkinson (born 6 January 1955)
Here I am actually talking of the most famous character taken on by this actor, Mr Bean. Some days nearly everything this man does will totally choke me up, then there are days I need to rest from him. In the end he will always get me back with those dopey facial expressions he pulls and those totally bizarre, bungling antics of his. He also has been listed in 'The Observer' as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy. Whether you love him or loathe him, his success worldwide has to be admired, on a character who never spoke at all when he first appeared as Bean on our screens. Who wouldn't die to have his bank balance at the end of the day?
Patricia Routledge born 17th Febraury 1929
I love her for the most famous role she plays on British sitcom TV, Mrs Bucket , in Keeping Up Appearances , which still airs nightly in my country, Australia. As she would say in her rather snobby, upper class voice,
"It is not Mrs Bucket, it is Mrs Bou-quet".
Her ongoing aim in life is to impress neighbours, friends and important people, however her family often getting in the way of her plans. With a sister she views as a bit of a tart and a boozing brother in law on top, things don't often go to her plans. I laugh at her obedient, faithful husband Richard, who always gets dragged into the deep end of things. Keeping Up Appearances to me has to be one of the most funny and entertaining comedy sitcoms on television I have seen and enjoyed.
Dame Edna Everage (alias Barry Humphries born 17 February 1934)
This great Aussie icon queen is simply hilarious. With her never ending maternal advice for those in need, and her wonderful expressions, "Oh possums", how can you not love her. Who would have though seriously that 'drag' would become so fashionable. You just have to admire that blue rinse teased up hair and those lovely long frocks, Oh Dame Edna you make us so proud to be Australian.
Norman Gunston played by Garry McDonald
Born 30 October 1948
For a lot of people who live oversees you may not be familiar with Norman Gunston. Norman was a satirical TV character played by McDonald in the late 70's who took delight in interviewing famous celebrities, especially in Hollywood. He always had paper stuck to his face, to indicate he cut his face shaving, an added ploy for extra laughs. The Americans were perplexed by this man, evident in the many interviews he did.
Was this Aussie man really like this? Could an Australian be as loopy as this? Often a lot of celebrities became cross with him or offended. However this never seemed to subdue Gunston in any way, shape or form. He was love-able, immature in his ways, a hopeless shaver and totally hilarious. Boy oh boy, I have come to know him from the many repeats of his show The Norman Gunston Show, which air currently in my home town.
You must watch the clip I have included of him in this Hub, a fine example of the man he was, and how celebrities reacted to him.
Billy Connolly (born William Connolly, Jr. on 24 November 1942)
I had to add Billy to this article. Billy is a fabulous Scottish comedian, musician, presenter and actor. Billy married Pamela Stevenson (famous for 'Not The Nine'O Clock News') and has been married 18 years. Billy has excelled in stand-up comedy as well as starring in some great films such as 'The Boondock Saints', 'The Man Who Sued God', 'The Last Samurai', 'The X-Files: I Want to Believe' and 'The Secret Policeman's Ball'. He will soon be reprising his role as Noah "Il Duce" McManus in Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.

This is a must see of Norman Gunston. Overseas artists did not know how to take him. This is hilarious..

Groucho Marx was the greatest! Have you read his books? And I haven't thought of Michael Crawford in years...he really was a riot!
Oh good! You got it fixed! Glad to help. Now I need help getting my damn internet back on my laptop.Just using my moms laptop for now?!....
I swear I commented...Seriously.... did you see me comment?
Benny Hill is the best...My all time favortite. (test)
May I want those manuscripts...BP!!!!! :)
I missed hub page so much that I created a quick hub. Check it out!
Be thankful that laptops internet is down!
Hey, BP. Great list. Many of my absolute favorites listed here. I saw Dame Edna live just two years ago and I thought I was going to bust a gut laughing so hard. Of course, so many of these need no explanation. Super!
BP, You has More mail!!!!! :) I am a poor stalker.
How can you show a pic of Pryor/Wilder and then shout out Gene alone. Richard Pryor was incredibly funny.
OMG - Hubber hell. Another reason to compose elsewhere and "copy and paste." Blonde I feel your pain.
A couple of absentees come to mind: John Belushi, Steven Wright, Gilda Radner, and Madeline Kahn. Also the combination of Tim Conway and Harvey Korman on the Carol Burnett show in ancient times.
Paul Hogan used to be pretty funny as well
No, heard no more after he made those Crocodile Dundee movies and settled in America
cya, having my vegemite toast in lieu of that cheesecake
Good job compiling BP....and good morning to you as you're off to bed. Robin Williams...have you seen his movie RV? Had to watch it several times as I was laughing so hard I missed some of the punch lines. Also agree with Tom...Harvey Corman and Tim Conway together on the Carol Burnett Show (telly)..and heck don't forget Carol Burnett herself. And how could you forget Steve Martin??? Funny in The Pink Panther and my favorite of his "Roxanne".
A complete list is a difficult list to compile.
Ah of course Steve Martin, and Bette Midler
Steve Martin! That's one white guy who can act black!
I'm glad she didn't mentioned Pee-Wee Herman!
I forgot the original Pink Panther...Peter Sellers.
That's a good list and I was pleased to see Benny Hill topping it. I'd have to find space for Billy Connolly in any top ten though.
Wonderful tribute to people who keep the doctors away. But you forgot somebody, I think. You forgot to add yourself for you are one funny girl BP :D
Yeah, Billy Connolly has to be in the list!
Hey BP, you checked out my new hub? I answered Bad's request. Poor man is sounding so desperate, thought we had to do something to help.
BP....go out and rent Robin Williams movie RV....then if you don't die laughing, let me know what you thought.....if you don't like it I'll refund your money....what kind of money do you use ???? Dollars, Ruples, Kronar, Pesos, Dinar?????? I'll pay you in Pesos....have 50 right here.
cindy...what is that....self promotion????....and yes BP...it's a hoot
BP, nice choices! My two favorites are Patricia Routledge and Mr. BEAN! I'll never forget staying with my son in the hospital, and we stayed up one night and saw Mr. Bean for the first time. We laughed so hard that the nurse came in to see if we were okay. That particular episode contained highlights of many of his shows...one of them was when he lost his watch inside of a turkey and ended up with the turkey on his head. LOL! It's amazing how someone can be that funny and not say a word. :D
Yeah, have to self-promote. It's sad, eh? Times are tough.
Didn't you nail me for self promotion earlier cindy??? If not .....everyone be sure to leave your love woes and sex questions for Dr Love care of R. Blue
Hey that is a good funny collection of information. But where is the king of laughter "Charlie Chaplin"...???
Call me PP (PackerPack) :)
Hi Deb,
I agree almost totally with your funniest people - not sure about Benny Hill - got over him pretty quickly.
Other favourites of mine are:
Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe, George Carlin, Bill Cosby (particyularly his early stuff), Barry Humphries (Dame Edna Everage), and the guys from Little Britain.
Thank you Eric ! I love Benny Hill and Mr Bean of course ! But I am glad somebody mentioned George Carlin . He was a little raunchier then some of the above mentioned but nonetheless just hilarious !
I also love the whole Monty Python cast and the original Saturday Night lineup . Of the Modern day comediennes Ellen Degeneres Is totally funny without having to resort to raunch. Which to me Is the true essence of comedy because humor should have an element of sophistication to It ! I like Denis Leary too !
Basically American comedians . George Carlin passed away about a year ago. But he was a classic.
Denis Leary Is a contemporary comedian who has been In quite a few movies . You can see both of them on youtube .
ZOMG!
Some great people here, and some I wish I've been introducted to before--
""Oh the cat did a whoopsie in me beret", is a classic line from this hilarious show"
Hah!
Unfortuantely, most Americans aren't apt to go beyond our borders for funny. I've not much way to get many things that aren't stamped with the american flag. ;)
Jim Carey is a god, and a great actor in general. I love all his stuff..
...Eddie Murphy's humor can best be summed up by these lines:
"I gotta hand it to you white people, a few terrorists with guns and you go bomb the crap out of....but us blacks back in Africa? Slavery for hundreds of year? Nnot one nigger in a canoe.."
haha..and he said it, and not I. ;)
G|M
No Frank Spencer that I am aware of..
Shrek was hilarious!
Oh my, just looking at Jim Carry makes me giggle :)
ME! Lol that is some shit there!
BP- I would have to go with young Eddie Murphy as far as being the funniest in my lifetime but watching Robin Williams doing live routines is amazing, that is a brilliance all on its own
No, don't watch that movie, its one of his lamest, save the computer space!
There is a website called www.youku.com, you watch the movies online and don't have to download them.
Respectfully disagree GT...be your own judge on that one BP....and maybe it was just me.
Good list I love Robin Williams, he is a great comedian and a perfect actor.
"Excuse me would you hop up please I would like to take a look at your Volvo" that is one of the most funniest movies i've ever seen ! Is it called nine month because it is one comedy that you have to have at home as a DVD! awesome work...I so love Jim tooo he is so i don't know funny funny!!
Great list my friend!! The pics are so conveying the funny character each man has. ESP mr been ladin
GREAT list!
The little old bald guy getting patted on the head will forever be hilarious and I'm not even sure why! :-)
Did you forget Graham Kennedy bp?
I love Rowan Atkinson, a huge talent and was glad you included Groucho. You know, I worry about some of the past greats being forgotten by the younger folks but it seems like Groucho still lives on.
Bill Cosby!
Blonde - I pretty much agree with your whole list. Though I love Monty Python and Spike Milligan - absolute nutter, wrote a poem called 'On the ning nang nong'. Have a read - brilliant ;)http://www.poetryarchive.org/childrensarchive/sing
Great stuff!
Spike Milligan. A great funnyman with a unique outlook, I love him too. This is a great list.
Funny people. I never could get into Benny Hill, I remember seeing the show as a kid but it never really entertained me. Most of the others though are great choices.
Sally Struther has that "deer in the headlights" look at first. That was hilarious, I laughed so hard I cried. I have never heard of Norman Gunston, I'll have to go find more videos.
Good stuff. Many of your names I don't know because they aren't known here in the States. Rowan Atkinson is one of my favorites. He did a series back in the late 80's called Black Adder, they are hilarious. Benny Hill is also one of my faves.
Just been watching Billy Connolly, I was actually thinking of you.... He just comes out with what everyone else is probably thinking, as you did on the story of ours that was going absolutely nowhere, so you geed it up a bit...... coincidence I now found this also, you always work so hard on your hubs they must take hours....
Wonderful hub...I love funny people! Thanks....great work! :)
Sure thing, there is a solution, put a bit of weight or a lot like me you wont get sore....
It is 2.05 A.M. What time is it there approx.....
And do you see Koala bears?????
The Goodys were hilarious.
Emo Phillips is really a dry wit, you have to be alert.
Tim Wilson's songs are the best!
And I would have to say a lot of what your comments in the forum make me laugh and smile!
Thanks for reminding me of Michael Crawford. He was hilarious!
This is only the second of your hubs that I have read. There's so much to do and so much computer screen gazing to tire one's eyes but I'll be reading your stuff. I agree with your opinions about the comedians. I love comedy. Consider me a fan!
I don't know many of them blondepoet but yes eddie murphy, robin williams and jim carrey have made me laugh. Jim carrey's role in 'the mask' was i feel his best.
If you google Emo Phillips you will get a kick out him if you like humor that sneaks up on you and kicks you in the pants.
Have missed you. Hope things are okay.
Everybody forgets the legacy and talent that was Benny Hill. He was a comic genius, yet never used vulgar language, was always kinky but understated, and never used nudity or violence to get his laughs. I am sure he may have been a typical guy behind the scenes, but he seemed to treat his cast with respect and obviously loved what he was doing...Hats off to Benny Hill. The funniest man who wasn't on American Television!!!
Hi BP,
Loved Stir Crazy. I hope you had a chance to see George Carlin.
Another all time favorite of mine is Bill Cosby. Check him out on YouTube, the clip 'Myself' and the dentist one. I could watch those a million times and laugh as hard as I did the first time.
You've got them so right, BP, but I must agree with Trish-George Carlin was THE funniest ever!
This is an awesome collection!
Wonderful blonde poet, there are never too many good comedians.
What a great list. You have some of my favourites, especially Benny Hill, John Cleese and of course the incomparable Andrew "Manuel" Sachs. Some of my other favourites include Peter Sellers, the show On the Buses with Reg Varney, Last of the Summer Wine. A couple of really funny books I recommend are Three in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome written at the end of the 19th. century and Alexander McCall Smith's Portuguese Irregular Verbs. It's now available as part of a trilogy called the 2 1/2 Pillars of Wisdom. Thanks for this I'm going to Youtube to watch some of the old shows. By the way if you haven't seen any of them, please, please watch Creature Comforts especially the Lion they are by Aardman studios who did Wallace and Gromit. Available on Youtube. Thanks for making me laugh.
Dumb and dumber is a classic funny movie. Great list from the one and only hot Australian babe. Haha
I love your personal list of funny people. I am usually in stitches with most of them but need to research Michael Crawford. Thank you for a few chuckles this evening.
great hub... particularly like the Been Laden photo :-)
John Cleese and Jim Carrey are two of my faves! Although, I did notice that *I* was missing from this list.
well, I was three times mistaken for Patrick Stump when I was in Vegas...

What the heck?! I think you posted the same capsule too many times girl! I'm suprise to find the comment box at least?! LOL
My number one favorite is Robin Williams. I especially enjoy his presence in the show "Whose Line is it Anyway"
